Credit Card Balance Transfer in India: Costs, Risks and Checklist

Thinking about a credit-card balance transfer? Compare interest, processing fees, EMI terms and total repayment before moving outstanding dues.

A transfer moves debt; it does not remove it

A credit-card balance transfer lets an eligible cardholder move outstanding dues from a card issued by one bank to a card issued by another bank. The receiving issuer may offer a promotional interest rate or an EMI repayment plan.

The aim is usually to replace expensive revolving card debt with a lower-cost or more structured arrangement. Approval is not automatic, and the transferable amount may be limited by available credit and the issuer's internal offer.

The amount is still debt. You must follow the new plan and confirm that the old card account received the transfer correctly.

SBI Card: Balance Transfer overview

Balance transfer versus balance transfer on EMI

SBI Card publishes both a Balance Transfer facility and a separate Balance Transfer on EMI facility. HDFC Bank describes its facility as Balance Transfer on EMI.

A promotional transfer may provide a special rate for a limited period. An EMI plan converts the transferred amount into scheduled instalments. Exact tenures, rates and fees vary by customer, issuer and offer.

Do not choose only by looking at the monthly figure. Compare the complete repayment, the promotional end date and the treatment of any unpaid amount.

Check eligibility and the usable limit

These facilities are commonly available only to selected existing cardholders. The issuer may restrict qualifying cards, the minimum amount and the maximum portion of available credit that can be used.

SBI Card's current Balance Transfer on EMI FAQ publishes product-specific limits and says the maximum available amount is communicated at booking. Those figures are not a universal Indian rule.

Ask whether the transfer will block your limit. A large booking can leave little capacity for new purchases, recurring payments or fees.

Compare every cost

Start with the Annual Percentage Rate, or APR. RBI's current commercial-bank card directions require issuers to quote APRs for different situations, including balance transfers, when they differ, with clear calculation examples.

Check the processing fee, taxes, total interest, EMI amount, tenure, foreclosure charge, late-payment consequences and the rate that applies after any promotional period.

Zero interest does not necessarily mean zero cost because fees and taxes may apply. Zero processing fee also does not prove that the interest rate is competitive.

Calculate total repayment

Assume you transfer ₹80,000. A hypothetical offer charges a ₹1,200 processing fee and ₹4,800 total interest. Before taxes or later charges, the cost would be ₹86,000.

This is an illustration, not an issuer quote. Request the actual schedule and add every instalment, fee and tax. Compare that total with clearing the original card faster and with other regulated options.

A lower advertised rate may still be poor value when the fee is high, the tenure is unnecessarily long or early repayment is expensive.

Keep paying until the old card is credited

Submitting a request does not immediately settle the old card. SBI Card says its transfer is sent to the other-bank card through NEFT within its published period. HDFC Bank describes a different transfer method and timeline.

Until the credit posts, monitor the old due date and amount payable. Missing a required payment while waiting may trigger interest or late charges under the old issuer's terms.

Afterward, check for residual interest, fees, pending transactions, EMIs and subscriptions. A transfer does not automatically close the old card.

Be careful with new purchases

Ask how the transferred balance affects available credit and payment allocation. Purchases, fees, EMIs and the transfer may share one account, with payments applied in an issuer-defined order.

Confirm whether new purchases receive an interest-free period while the transfer remains outstanding. RBI directions state that the interest-free period is suspended when a previous bill balance remains unpaid, but the exact transfer treatment should be checked.

Editorial suggestion: avoid non-essential purchases on the receiving card until the debt is under control.

Understand early repayment and closure

Ask whether part-payment is allowed and whether foreclosure attracts a fee. SBI Card's current EMI-transfer FAQ publishes a product-specific foreclosure charge, which should not be generalised to other cards.

To close the old card, wait until the transfer posts and all remaining dues, refunds and disputes are resolved. Submit a separate closure request and save the confirmation.

Before closing the receiving card, request the complete foreclosure or closure amount in writing.

When can a transfer help?

It may help when the verified total cost is lower, the instalment fits your budget and the plan gives you a realistic debt-free date.

It may not help if you continue heavy spending, choose a long tenure only to reduce the EMI, or repeatedly move balances without reducing principal.

Editorial interpretation: use it as a repayment tool, not extra spending capacity. Set aside the instalment before the due date and track every statement.

Confirmed facts and key takeaways

Confirmed: issuers offer balance-transfer facilities subject to eligibility; limits, methods and fees differ; RBI requires transparent APR disclosure for balance transfers and transparency when card transactions are converted to EMI.

Interpretation: a transfer is useful only when it reduces total cost and supports disciplined repayment. A promotional rate alone is insufficient.

Key takeaways: verify eligibility, compare total repayment, keep paying the old card until credit posts, check purchase treatment, understand foreclosure costs and obtain closure confirmation when cancelling a card.

Frequently asked questions

Does a balance transfer close my old card?

No. Closure requires a separate request after all remaining transactions and charges are resolved.

Can I transfer the full outstanding?

Not necessarily. The issuer may set minimum and maximum amounts based on eligibility and available credit.

Is a zero-interest transfer free?

Not always. Processing fees, taxes or costs after the promotional period may apply.

Should I stop paying the old card after applying?

No. Meet its payment requirements until the transfer is actually credited.

Will it improve my credit score?

No score change is guaranteed. Repayment history, balances, utilisation and other factors may matter.
