5 Best Free Credit Cards in India: No Annual Fee Picks

Compare five credit cards with no joining or annual fee, matched to shopping, travel, everyday rewards and UPI, with important costs and conditions.

A good free credit card should fit your spending without making you chase an annual-fee waiver. These five options cover different needs. The best choice depends on where you shop, how you travel and whether you can use the rewards.

What does free actually mean?

For this comparison, free means no joining fee and no recurring annual fee in the official information checked. A first-year-free offer is different: a fee may begin in the second year. A spend-based waiver is also different because you must meet a target.

Interest, late-payment charges, cash-advance fees and transaction-specific charges can still apply. A paid shopping membership is another separate cost. Read the personalised offer and Most Important Terms and Conditions before accepting the card.

How we selected these five

This is an editorial shortlist by use case, not an exhaustive ranking of every Indian card. We prioritised an explicitly published zero joining and annual fee, a clear consumer use and official information we could verify. We excluded conditional fee waivers from the definition of free.

The recommended use cases are our interpretation. Fee statements and product features come from the linked bank pages. Availability, eligibility and benefits can change, and a card that suits one household may not suit another.

Five options at a glance

Scapia Axis Bank₹0 / ₹0Travel and overseas spending
HSBC Visa Platinum₹0 / ₹0General rewards and airline redemption
ICICI Bank Platinum Chip₹0 / ₹0A straightforward everyday card
Kwik Axis Bank₹0 / ₹0UPI-focused users

Published fees as checked; other charges apply. Kwik requires further detailed-term confirmation.

1. Amazon Pay ICICI Bank

ICICI lists no joining or annual fee. Eligible Amazon purchases earn up to 5% rewards for Prime members and up to 3% for non-Prime members. The higher headline rate therefore depends on membership and purchase eligibility. Official bank source.

Editorial view: Our pick for regular Amazon shoppers. Compare the price of the item elsewhere before buying. A reward does not compensate for paying more for the same product. Check where rewards can be used and whether your intended purchase qualifies; do not assume every Amazon transaction earns the headline rate.

2. Scapia Axis Bank

Axis lists zero joining and annual fees and zero forex markup. Rewards are Scapia Coins redeemed through the Scapia app. Mastercard and RuPay have different earning rules; coins are not the same as rupee cashback. Official bank source.

Editorial view: Our travel choice for people comfortable using Scapia. Compare booking prices and redemption terms before committing. Zero issuer forex markup does not remove currency conversion or charges imposed by a merchant or ATM. Airport benefits have spending conditions, so do not assume access simply because you hold the card.

3. HSBC Visa Platinum

HSBC publishes joining and annual fees of ₹0. Its product page offers rewards and conversion to selected airline miles. Temporary welcome promotions have separate conditions and are not the reason for its inclusion. Official bank source.

Editorial view: Consider it if you want a general rewards card without an annual-fee target. Check the reward value for your preferred redemption, not just the number of points earned. Confirm current serviceable locations and applicant requirements before applying. A no-fee product is not a promise of approval.

4. ICICI Bank Platinum Chip

ICICI explicitly lists no joining fee and no annual fee. The card offers reward points on eligible transactions, with redemption across supported categories. Official bank source.

Editorial view: A practical shortlist option if keeping costs and card management simple matters more than chasing the highest promotional return. Compare redemption charges and exclusions before treating points as savings. If you already have an equivalent no-fee card, opening another account may add little value.

5. Kwik Axis Bank

Axis Bank’s related-products listing identifies Kwik as a credit card on UPI and states nil joining and annual fees. This listing confirms the fee position, but does not establish all current application or transaction conditions. Official bank source (related-products listing).

Editorial view: A conditional shortlist choice for UPI users: confirm application availability, supported payment apps, eligible merchant payments and current detailed terms before applying. We have not assigned a cashback percentage or promised rewards on every QR payment. If those details are unavailable in your offer, postpone the application.

Choose using your actual spending

Start with the purchases you already make. For frequent Amazon shopping, compare Amazon Pay ICICI first. For travel and overseas purchases, examine Scapia. For general rewards, compare HSBC Platinum with ICICI Platinum Chip. For UPI, investigate Kwik’s full terms before deciding.

There is no need to apply for all five. Select one that matches your needs and repayment capacity. Check exclusions for your largest expense categories, how rewards are redeemed, and whether benefits require spending you would not otherwise make.

Key takeaways

No annual fee is useful because you do not need to chase a fee-waiver target. It does not make borrowing free. Pay the Total Amount Due by the due date where possible, and check the issuer’s interest-free-period conditions.

Compare net value after membership costs, redemption fees and any transaction charges. Keep a copy of the fee offer accepted during application. Recheck changes communicated by the issuer rather than relying indefinitely on a comparison article.

Frequently asked questions

Which free card is best overall?

There is no universal winner. Amazon Pay ICICI is our shopping pick; Scapia is our travel pick. Choose according to your normal spending and the current offer.

Does lifetime free mean no charges at all?

No. It refers to joining and annual fees. Finance charges and other fees may apply under the card terms.

Is approval guaranteed for a free card?

No. The issuer assesses the application. Confirm its income, documentation, location and credit requirements.

Should I replace my paid card?

Compare benefits you actually use with the annual cost. A paid card can be worthwhile, but unused benefits do not justify its fee.
